I. Physical Properties
Appearance and Morphology
Calcium carbonate is a white, odorless powder or crystalline solid at room temperature. In its natural mineral form (such as marble), it appears as white or multicolored blocky crystals with a certain luster. Industrially produced light calcium carbonate is a loose powder, while heavy calcium carbonate is a finely ground powder; the two differ in particle size and bulk density.
Solubility
Calcium carbonate is sparingly soluble, with extremely low solubility in pure water, approximately 0.0014 g/100 mL at 20°C. However, it is soluble in acidic solutions (such as hydrochloric acid and acetic acid), releasing carbon dioxide gas upon dissolution. This characteristic is an important method for identifying calcium carbonate.
Density and Hardness
The density of calcium carbonate varies depending on the crystal form and preparation process: heavy calcium carbonate has a density of approximately 2.6~2.9 g/cm³, while light calcium carbonate has a density of approximately 2.4~2.6 g/cm³. Its Mohs hardness is 3, indicating a relatively soft texture; it can be slightly scratched with a fingernail. Natural calcite crystals have three sets of perfect cleavage planes.
Stability and Hygroscopicity
Calcium carbonate is stable under dry conditions at room temperature, is non-hygroscopic, and does not easily clump. However, prolonged exposure to humid environments, especially in the presence of acidic gases (such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide), can cause a slow reaction.
II. Chemical Properties
Reaction with Acids
Calcium carbonate can undergo a double displacement reaction with strong acids, producing soluble calcium salts, water, and carbon dioxide. This reaction is commonly used in laboratory production of carbon dioxide and in industrial treatment of acidic wastewater.
Thermal Decomposition Reaction
Calcium carbonate is unstable when heated. Under high-temperature conditions (approximately 825℃), it decomposes into calcium oxide (quicklime) and carbon dioxide. This is the core reaction in the industrial production of quicklime from limestone.
Reaction with Carbon Dioxide
In the presence of water, the introduction of excess carbon dioxide into calcium carbonate produces water-soluble calcium bicarbonate. This reaction is the chemical principle behind the formation of caves and stalactites in nature. Conversely, when a calcium bicarbonate solution is heated or depressurized, it decomposes and reforms into calcium carbonate precipitate.
Non-Reducing and Weakly Alkaline
Calcium carbonate has mild chemical properties and no reducing properties. Its suspension is weakly alkaline and can be used to adjust the pH of water or soil, but its alkalinity is much weaker than that of calcium hydroxide.
Aplicaciones Principales
I. Building Materials Industry
Cement and Concrete Production
Calcium carbonate is a key raw material for cement clinker. After high-temperature calcination, it produces calcium oxide, which participates in the cement hydration reaction. It can also be used as a filler in concrete, improving its strength, wear resistance, and durability while reducing production costs.
Wall Materials and Decorative Materials
Used in the production of gypsum board, lightweight partition boards, ceramic tiles, and marble simulation panels, it improves the material's formability, whiteness, and compressive strength. It can also be used as a filler in paints and putty powders, enhancing the coating's hiding power and adhesion, and improving wall surface smoothness.
Road Engineering
As a filler for road base courses, it is mixed with asphalt to form asphalt mixtures, improving the road surface's compressive strength and anti-aging properties. Suitable for paving highways and municipal roads.
II. Plastics and Rubber Industry
Plastic Modified Filler
One of the most widely used inorganic fillers in the plastics industry, it can be used in general-purpose plastics such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), as well as engineering plastics such as ABS and nylon. Adding calcium carbonate can improve the rigidity, heat resistance, and dimensional stability of plastics, while reducing raw material costs. Nano-calcium carbonate can also enhance the toughness and impact resistance of plastics, and is used in the production of automotive parts, appliance casings, and pipes.
Rubber Reinforcing Agent
In rubber products, calcium carbonate can be used as a reinforcing filler and expander to improve the tensile strength, tear strength, and abrasion resistance of rubber, and improve processing performance. It is widely used in the production of tires, rubber seals, conveyor belts, shoe soles, etc. Activated calcium carbonate (surface modified) has better compatibility with rubber and a superior reinforcing effect.
III. Paper Industry
Paper Filler
Used in the production of various types of paper, such as cultural paper, packaging paper, and toilet paper, adding calcium carbonate can improve the whiteness, opacity, smoothness, and printability of paper, reduce the amount of fiber raw materials used, and lower paper production costs. Heavy calcium carbonate is mostly used in low basis weight paper, while light calcium carbonate is suitable for mid- to high-grade paper.
Paper Coatings
As pigments for coated paper, calcium carbonate is mixed with adhesives and additives to form coatings. Applied to the paper surface, it enhances the paper's gloss, smoothness, and ink absorption, and is used in the production of high-grade printing papers such as coated paper and lightweight coated paper.
IV. Coating and Ink Industry
Coating Fillers and Pigments
In latex paints, water-based coatings, and oil-based coatings, calcium carbonate can be used as an extender pigment to enhance the coating's hiding power, weather resistance, and scrub resistance, while reducing the coating's formulation cost. Some high-whiteness calcium carbonate can replace titanium dioxide, reducing the amount of expensive pigments used.
Ink Fillers
Used in the production of offset printing inks and gravure printing inks, it improves the ink's fluidity, stability, and tinting strength, and enhances the clarity of printed materials. It is suitable for packaging printing, book printing, and other fields.
V. Food, Pharmaceutical, and Daily Chemical Industries
1. Food Additives
As food-grade calcium carbonate, it can be used as a calcium fortifier, added to dairy products, biscuits, bread, beverages, and other foods to supplement the body's calcium needs. It can also be used as an acidity regulator and anti-caking agent in the production of milk powder, condiments, and candies.
2. Pharmaceutical Industry
- As a raw material for calcium supplements, it is used in the production of calcium carbonate tablets, calcium carbonate D3 granules, and other drugs, suitable for the prevention and treatment of calcium deficiency.
- As a pharmaceutical excipient, it can be used as a filler and disintegrant in tablets, improving the formability and solubility of drugs.
3. Daily Chemical Industry
Used in toothpaste production as an abrasive, it effectively cleans plaque and stains from the tooth surface without damaging tooth enamel. It can also be used in cosmetics as a powder raw material to adjust the product's feel and coverage.
VI. Environmental Protection and Other Fields
1. Environmental Governance
Used for treating acidic wastewater, it lowers the pH value of the wastewater through a neutralization reaction; it can also be used as a desulfurizing agent in flue gas desulfurization systems of coal-fired power plants and steel plants, reacting with sulfur dioxide to produce calcium sulfate, reducing harmful gas emissions.
2. Feed Industry
As feed-grade calcium carbonate, it is a calcium supplement for livestock, poultry, and aquaculture animals, promoting animal bone development, eggshell formation, and improving survival rates.
Precauciones de Seguridad
I. Health and Safety Precautions
Skin Contact Protection
Calcium carbonate is a white powder and is not corrosive in itself. However, prolonged or repeated contact can absorb oils from the skin's surface, leading to dryness and peeling. It is recommended to wear cotton or nitrile gloves and long-sleeved work clothes during handling to avoid prolonged skin exposure. If accidental contact occurs, simply rinse with water; no special treatment is needed. If itching occurs, apply a mild moisturizing lotion for relief.
Eye Protection
If calcium carbonate dust splashes into the eyes, it can irritate the conjunctiva, causing discomfort such as a foreign body sensation and tearing, but it will not cause serious damage. Wear impact-resistant goggles during operation, especially during dusty processes such as crushing, screening, and feeding. If eye contact occurs, immediately lift the eyelids and rinse with plenty of running water for 1-2 minutes. The discomfort should subside on its own after rubbing. If discomfort persists, seek medical attention promptly.
Respiratory Protection
Inhalation of calcium carbonate dust can cause it to deposit on the nasal and pharyngeal mucosa, leading to symptoms such as dry throat and cough. Long-term, high-volume inhalation may cause mild respiratory inflammation. Operations must be carried out in well-ventilated areas or with local exhaust ventilation equipment activated. When dust levels are high, wear a KN90 or higher level dust mask. Rinse your mouth and clean your nasal cavity promptly after work to reduce dust residue.
Ingestion Protection
Calcium carbonate is low in toxicity; small amounts ingested will not harm the human body (food-grade calcium carbonate is commonly used as a food additive). However, industrial-grade calcium carbonate may contain trace impurities, and excessive ingestion can cause gastrointestinal discomfort such as bloating and constipation. Wash hands after handling. Eating and smoking are strictly prohibited in the work area. Industrial-grade products must be stored strictly separately from food, beverages, and animal feed, and the packaging must be labeled "Industrial Use." In case of large-volume ingestion, drink warm water to promote metabolism. Seek medical attention if severe bloating occurs.
II. Storage and Transportation Safety Precautions
Storage Requirements
- Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse, away from fire and heat sources. Strict temperature control is not required; relative humidity should not exceed 80%.
- Use woven bags or sealed containers lined with plastic film to prevent moisture absorption and clumping. When stacking, elevate the bottom of the container at least 10cm and maintain a 20cm distance from the wall to prevent moisture damage.
- Do not store with strong acids (hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, etc.) to prevent reactions that generate carbon dioxide gas, causing packaging expansion or even rupture. Store separately from other chemical products.
- The storage area should be equipped with basic spill handling tools such as brooms and dustpans; no special emergency equipment is required.
Transportation Requirements
- Keep transport vehicles clean and dry. Rainproof tarpaulins can be laid in the cargo compartment to prevent product moisture absorption. Cover the product with tarpaulins during transportation to avoid rain, sun exposure, and dust.
- Handle with care during loading and unloading to prevent damage to packaging and powder leakage; strictly prohibit transportation with strong acids to avoid chemical reactions during transport.
- Calcium carbonate is a common chemical product; transportation should follow general cargo transportation regulations, avoiding densely populated areas.
III. Emergency Handling of Leaks
Small Leaks: Collect directly with a dry broom or shovel into a sealed container, repackage, and continue use; no special treatment is required. Spilled dust can be swept up directly to avoid raising it.
Large Leaks: Establish a temporary warning zone, prohibiting unauthorized personnel from entering; contain the leak area with impermeable fabric, collect the spilled material, and transfer it to a dedicated container; wear a dust mask during handling to avoid dust inhalation. Do not flush leaked material into sewers to prevent small amounts of undisturbed dust from clogging pipes.
IV. Environmental Safety Precautions
Calcium carbonate is virtually harmless to the environment; small amounts entering water or soil will not cause pollution, but large amounts of dust entering water may temporarily affect water transparency. Production wastewater can be discharged after simple sedimentation treatment without neutralization.
Waste calcium carbonate packaging can be recycled or disposed of as general solid waste; expired or scrapped industrial-grade calcium carbonate can be directly landfilled without harming the soil.
